About Us

Our Role and Objectives

The Luton Senior Persons Art and Recreational Forum (SCARF) was formally established in February 2004. It's purpose is to ensure that there is an independent body to influence policy, planning and service delivery of art, entertainment and leisure activities targeting the diversity of older people residing in Luton whether they be in residential accommodation or within their own homes.

The Forum's role shall be to promote and co-ordinate International Older Persons' Week annually.

If you are or care for an older person with skills or talents, we would love to hear from you. As Gwen Wilson, one of our members, said during one of our International Older Persons' planning meetings "lose it or use it".

Our Background

In 2003, International Older Persons' Day was promoted in Luton with a week of events and concerts that were financially supported by Luton Borough Council, Better Government for Older People, Sports Action Zone and Tenants and Residents Associations (TARA).

There were a number of other partners involved in the activities such as Luton Primary Care Trust, community organisations, such as the Asian and African/Caribbean luncheon clubs, Salvation Army, Vauxhall Choir and the local Bobby Scheme, to name but a few. The outcome of the 2003 activities is the development of the Luton Senior Citizens' Art and Recreational Forum, an independent voluntary group who is committed to ensuring that International Older Persons' Day remains a special day for older people in Luton, like that of any annual events such as International Womens' Week.
